Services on Campus

Emergency contraception (EC) is also sometimes called Plan B or the “morning after” pill.  EC is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.  It works best when taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex.  EC can be purchased over the counter in the state of California for people aged 18 and over and usually costs $45-$65.

EC is made of the same hormones found in birth control pill. It prevents pregnancy by preventing the woman from ovulating-releasing an egg. There can be no pregnancy if there is no egg to join with the sperm. The hormones in EC also thicken a woman’s cervical mucus. The mucus blocks sperm and keeps the sperm from joining with the woman’s egg.

It is important to understand the EC will not work if the woman is already pregnant. EC is not an abortion pill.

How Effective is EC?

EC reduces the risk of pregnancy by 89% if taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex.

After taking EC you may feel nausea, breast tenderness, or you may experience some irregular bleeding.  EC should not be taken as ongoing birth control because it is not as effective as other methods of birth control.

If you need to find a pharmacy that sells EC you can visit the following website: www.go2planb.com[/vc_column_text][/toggle][toggle color=”Default” title=”Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings”][vc_column_text]AA
